According to a certain Joe Camilleri, teachers neither contribute to the economy of the Maltese nation nor do they create jobs

Here is a post I came across of Rosalba Ebejer Catania, an educator, commenting on another comment that a certain Joe Camilleri wrote on a Times of Malta article about teachers:

[To all my fellow teachers…if you thought that our profession is important because education is the pillar of society, I am sorry to tell you that you are wrong.

And the Genius Century Award goes to….Joe Camilleri! With his comment on today’s article of the Times, Mr. Camilleri kept on reminding me why it is important to keep on fighting for my rights!

Since this individual most likely never went to school, I would like to give you a transcript of what he is trying to say:

IF THEY DON’T LIKE THE SALARY, NOBODY IS FORCING THEM TO BECOME TEACHERS. AFTER ALL THESE PEOPLE ARE NEITHER CONTRIBUTING TO THE ECONOMY NOR CREATING JOBS.

God take me away!!! Any other comment is superfluous!]

Having been an educator myself, I can assure you that this type of disrespectful attitude towards teachers is nothing new as there is a big cohort of the Maltese society which is very disrespectful towards educators. Pure ignorance! And I am sorry to say, that in this country, there is a special kind of ignorance on all levels that has truly kept Malta backwards a thousand years. Truly I feel that I live on a forlorn planet of the apes.
