The power cuts that many countries are experiencing are warfare on the people for emergency preparedness (1)

Minister Miriam Dalli is on record stating that her goal is to leave a much more resilient electricity infrastructure. That is why for this year we have allocated €55 million to have a stronger infrastructure.

Stronger infrastructure? This summer we have been experiencing power cuts every week! In the words of Times of Malta: “Several localities have experienced sporadic power cuts throughout the last two weeks as temperatures rise to the mid and high 30ºC temperatures. The interruptions come a year since most of Malta and Gozo sustained repeated power cuts in the midst of a heatwave, sparking a crisis”.

But they will tell you that this is climate change and this is your fault.

Some argue that there are two issues at hand locally. The first has to do with energy distribution and infrastructure with outdated cables and poor planning caused by the construction of an excessive number of residences, commercial buildings and hotels on this little island, which is unable to meet the quickly rising demand. The second has to do with buildings. Buildings are being constructed in shell form, marketed as such, and with extremely constrained floor plans for rooms that are deemed usable. For hygienic and safety reasons, vendors are not allowed to advertise small spaces as habitable due to height and area restrictions imposed by the planning authority. Nevertheless, avaricious builders attempt to cram as many apartments as they can into a small area. Because such thicker finishes would reduce areas to below the authorized dimensions, this indicates that contractors are using thinner bricks and leaving no space for rockwool or Jablo insulation to defend against the heat of the sun and noise. Without insulation, rooms get extremely hot even when air conditioners are turned off, making them work harder. It implies that every room needs air conditioning. And it implies that apartments with open floor designs that need a lot of electricity to cool the open area are sold because of space constraints. When granting building permits, the PA must also take finishing touches into account, making it more than simply an Enemalta problem.

Others argue that it’s because of over-population.

We should not be buying all these power cuts – which coincidentally have been rolled out post-Covid19. Wasn’t everything supposed to return to normal? And this is what this site will tackle in a few upcoming articles.
