This dynamic prevents Germany and the US from supplying Ukraine with the more sophisticated missile systems that it sorely needs. Too many politicians and commentators in the US and Europe are repeating Putin’s own talking lines when they declare that World War III will break out if there is any external intervention in Ukraine. Actually, deploying troops from Europe would be typical in this kind of conflict. The invasion by Russia upset the balance of power in the region, and Europe has a stake in seeing that balance restored.
The most obvious way to accomplish this is to provide the Ukrainian military—which the US would once again desert—a lifeline, and the ideal lifeline would be European soldiers. Europe is Ukraine’s natural ally, but until US politics shift, the country will need other sources of support to continue its battle.
