After the massacre of the Mosta Trees, it is now the turn of those in a parking lot in Buġibba. Why do the authorities in this country hate trees?

After the massacre of the Mosta trees, it is now the turn of those in a parking lot in Buġibba .

Newsbook has reported that a number of mature ficus trees located in a parking lot in Buġibba are expected to be cut down, despite the fact that every evening they welcome more than 800 birds – white jays – that sleep in these trees every evening. A number of other trees in the same area also offer shelter to the birds of the roof that come to sleep in them every evening.

The news was given by Birdlife Malta on Facebook which said that it thanked the residents of Buġibba for bringing to its attention this other case after the Mosta saga which led to the destruction of the trees where the birds used to find shelter. BirdLife Malta said that today it brought its comments to the attention of the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) regarding the proposal to develop a huge health center in Bugibba which will mean the destruction of ‘ these trees (PA 4962/22).

It seems like the Environment Raping Authority is at it again. The irony is that these trees, which are the lungs for better air for people to breathe, and a relaxing feature for the human eye, will be destroyed to accommodate a health center! Health my foot! Buildings are becoming an eye sore for the naked eye and trees are surely an asset for the public’s health. Without forgetting that they are home to the birds. But who cares?

Bugibba has already unfortunately been turned into a slum area from the beautiful seaside and touristic resort it once was. What a shame on the authorities that should be protecting the local environment and little green left, to actually turn into an enemy of the Maltese environment.

What will be the long-term impact of all this on the Maltese nation and the Buġibba residents, who rightly so, are expected to join a protest to make their voices heard against the cutting of these trees. The protest is called for Thursday 28 December at 5pm.

The readers can immediately tell, from the picture below, how beautiful these trees are and the green impact they have on the area. Now close your eyes and imagine them gone with a health center instead.

Why does this country and the authorities have a problem with trees?
