What’s with those red shoes?

Dear readers, have a look at the following photos. Don’t you find the fact that they are all wearing red shoes strange? A new fashion?

Even Pope Benedict used to wear them. According to a catholic media explaination, “in the Catholic faith, red symbolizes martyrdom and the Passion of Christ” and that in other words, this signified that the pope was following in the footsteps of Christ.

Well, it did get the martyrdom factor right but there is more to it. And what about the rest of the men who wore red shoes? Was it a statement of Christ followers? What do you think?

The red shoes go all the way back in history to the Byzantine tradition when kings would wear them as symbols of bloody martyrdom.

What is it about following Christ, again?
