Dom Mintoff is described as a man who loved his country and who, although he did big mistakes, he also achieved big things.

He had his weaknesses and defects like all of us but he and will remain a big historical figure.

“U ġġilidna kontra n-NATO, iġġilidna kontra l-gvern Ingliż, iġġilidna kontra  ħafna li ma jaħmlux il-ħaddiem, u spiċċajna aktar magħqudin milli bdejna!”

“Għadna nifirħu, għax għadna s-soċjalisti li konna qabel, għax għadna mexjin fl-istess triq, bl-istess għajta: ‘Malta l-ewwel u qabel u kollox.'”

Mintoff was taken to hospital on 18th July 2012 but was later discharged on 4th August and spent his 96th birthday at home where he passed away on 20th August. He was given a state funeral by the government on 25th August.
